On November 21, 2013, Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray signed into law a bill that will set up a system where undocumented immigrants will receive driver’s licenses. These licenses will be marked “not valid for official federal purposes.”
D.C. joins 11 other states that have passed legislation allowing individuals to apply for driver’s licenses regardless of their immigration status. These states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Vermont. Similar laws were proposed in an additional 11 states in the last legislative session. These include Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Texas.
